Just Rum and Juice?!

It’s safe to say that here at Island we like rum. We could give you a hundred reasons why, but really it comes down to one thing; simplicity. We’re not saying rum is a simple beast; we can talk your ears off about the complexities of rum, the different production methods and the subtle flavour profiles in rums from different regions of the world - and we’ll do so if you really want us to (rum tastings coming soon *wink*). But at its core, if you get a good rum you can make what you mix with it as simple or complex as you like. In the words of Captain Fishcake “It’s just rum and juice, innit”.

So when Appleton rum started the hashtag #DiscoverRum we were fully on board. We love to try and get other people as excited about rum in the way we are and we’re fans of Appleton’s rum range - from the VX up to some of the older rums which are nice enough to drink neat. With its 260 year old history it’s one of the oldest rum producers in the world and regularly wins awards.

But when you get a good rum it doesn’t need a lot of pretentious ingredients like pomegranate juice hand-squeezed by blind tibetan monks, everyday ingredients will let the rum be the star of the show. And that’s why we’ve kept it simple with our #DiscoverRum specials, because we want you to discover the rum and not the bottom of your wallet because you’ve forked out for overblown ingredients.

With that (and Captain Fishcake’s comment) in mind, we’ve come up with the Captain’s Cure as our #DiscoverRum cocktail. It’s a delicious blend of rum and juice, or more specifically Appleton VX mixed with fresh lime, pineapple, guava and Ting grapefruit soda. The smooth richness of the rum isn’t overly sweet like other rums, so the citrus fruits really complement it and the Ting soda adds just a touch of sweetness to make this a really refreshing drink.

If you fancy trying a few different cocktails with Appleton rum we also recommend a Jamaican Mule made with Appleton VX, lime and ginger ale or perhaps something a little more classic - an Appleton Daiquiri or Old Fashioned will go down a treat!

We recommend…

Our bartenders know their stuff and we’re giving one of them the opportunity to come up with their own unique cocktail which will be on for a limited period of time only.

This time round it’s an ode to the Burnley Miners’ Club, who are the world’s biggest single consumer of Benedictine liqueur, after Lancashire regiments acquired a taste for it during the First World War. We’ve mixed Benedictine with Mount Gay rum (it is Island after all), apple juice, cinnamon and a touch of lemon juice for a refreshing yet flavoursome drink.

It’s yours for just £5…come down, try it out and let us know what you think!

We did it again…

It was a long Tuesday night in the Tiki bar as we hosted a Flor de Cana rum Florito cocktail competition - and we won!

Gathering together the best of Brum’s bartenders, drinks were made from representatives of The Victoria, Nuvo, Rose Villa Tavern, Le Truc, The New Inn, Bank, The Jekyll & Hyde, and of course us. Competition was fierce and with 22 competitors from Birmingham it was great to see such a good turn out - testament to the flourishing cocktail scene in the city and passionate bartenders keen to raise the bar for great drinks.

But a winner had to be chosen and the judges picked our assistant manager, Chris Langford, and his Manana de Cana cocktail - a mix of Flor de Cana 7 year old, sherry and pear brandy, served in a glass garnished with a hammock. Joining Chris is runner-up and Island bartender Mike Beedon, as well as Lucy Horncastle from The Victoria and Amanjot Johal from Le Truc. All of them are off to compete in the finals held in Manchester at the end of the month.

A massive thanks to all 22 competitors and everyone who came down to support them, and a big thanks to the three judges, Matt, Carl and Eduardo. Good luck to Chris, Mike and the others who will be flying the flag for Brum!

Music to our ears…

We’re big fans of music here at Island and we’re really proud of the rosta of DJs that come and play for you (and us) every weekend. On Friday nights it’s soul and funk all the way with T-Bidr and Carlton aka ‘Takin’ Care of Business’, mixmaster Steve Jones and Birmingham’s beardiest DJ Sam Redmore on the wheels of steel.

On Saturday it’s a bit more anything goes as Birmingham’s best and brightest DJs keep the party going all night long. Downstairs it’s down to Shimmy Shimmy Ya, Takin Care of Business, Shuffle’s Lee Goodman and even our management team get involved via their SCC alterego’s: Edwould and Gill.I.Am. Upstairs the Tiki Bar rocks to the sound of a slightly different drum. Hot Wax plays the best in funk, hip-hop and r ‘n’ b while Darrol Bradford plays whatever he bloomin’ well likes and always gets a conga line going!

Our music policy at weekends is simple, its gotta be good. We tend to stick to funk, soul rock ‘n roll, classic hip hop, alternative anthems and party tunes. We’re not Broad St and we don’t want to be so soulless current chart “RnB” isn’t something we tend to play, but if a song is good we’ll play it.
