Island Bar opened its doors to the masses in September 2006. Determined not to be a typical cocktail bar, the team behind Island set it up on DIY ethics determined to bring a lot of soul and no pretension to the Birmingham nightlife scene, becoming a hub for music and drink lovers alike.
We’ve taken away all the stuffy nonsense of traditional cocktail bars and made the focus all about the drinks. We’re proud of our range of drinks and the expertise of our staff, we think you will be too. We were voted one of the top 50 bars in the UK by the Independent on Sunday and have one of the West Midlands’ largest collections of rum – over 70 at last count.
Weekends we like to up the tempo with DJs on Friday and Saturday nights downstairs. Our upstairs function room is a Birmingham first – a unique Tiki bar with an 80 person capacity which we open up for DJ nights and hire out for private functions (Sunday to Thursday).
Our general manager, Simon Gilligan or Gill as he’s better known has many years experience in the cocktail and sarcasm industry. He brings a wealth of experience from such far-flung places such as Melbourne and Leicester and can even be seen stirring a Negroni to its hearts content on occasion and we’ve been told it’s pretty damn good when he does (well he told us to say that anyway). He’s flanked by his partner in crime and Assistant Manager, Joe Stevenson.
Having made strides and waves in Leeds for the past few years he came back to Birmingham and island bar his first true love, bringing with him some pretty damn good drinks, a splash of nerdiness and a love of Creme de Peche unrivallled by many. If they’re not playing Resident Evil on the Gamecube then you’ll catch them behind the bar where they’d love to sling you a drink, a shot or hear any feedback or suggestions you may well have!

Have you been to our newest venue yet?
Buffalo & Rye situated on Bennett’s Hill (next door to Bodega) is open Monday-Sunday. Food-wise they serve dirty burgers, gourmet dogs, house smoked meats and an all-day brunch. In terms of drinks, they’re all about milkshakes (with or without alcohol), cocktails and US imported beers. They don’t take reservations, tables are on a first come, first served basis.
